Northern Cyprus: Occupied

The northern part of Cyprus is occupied by Turkey. There's been a lot of fighting between Turkey and Greece over this island in the past (see my pictures post #1). In 1974 the UN got involved and the island was divided in 2. Until recently, nobody was allowed to cross the UN "buffer zone" - but now you can if you have a passport. The northern part is much poorer than the Greek part. I FINALLY walked over the border to visit by myself (for fun. trust me... I need some time by myself occasianlly)! Here's about that:

I had lunch at a cafe. The food was good. basically, I walked up to the guy at a cafe that looked good and said, "hi." He said "hi" back. I told him I was hungry and he started to reach for a menu - but quickly realized I wouldn't be able to read it anyway. So he pointed behind him at a dish he just made for himself and I said, "yeah, that looks great!" So that's what he made me. I had no idea how much it would cost or anything. He told me to have a seat.
I sat across from a random man. We ate together. He had some type of Shwarma (which is kind of like a borrito - typical Middle Eastern food). He didn't speak a word of English, so we didn't talk, but occasionally we looked at each other - and he gave me one of his hot peppers.

The lunch came and it was SO good! I had a can of Pepsi, a salad, some rice (with noodles mixed in), some french fries, and a bunch of little mini burgers (about 6, the same circumfrance as the top of a pop can). They were good, and it came with a large basket of bread. In the end - it only cost me 3 Cypriot pounds (which is $6 USD)! What a great deal!
Then I began walking around, past some shops in Nicosia (the Turkish occupied side, of course). I walked through some local/rural areas where people live. It's basically like apartments, and a lot of the doors were open. When I looked inside, the first thing I usually saw was a bed, and sometimes a dinner table. A lot of kids were playing outside and some older people were sitting on the front stoops.

At one point, I walked past a shop and met a dog. He was very nice and cute, but also very skinny. I REALLY wanted to buy him some food, but I didn't. And there was a white (albino) bunny, too. A real one. And the dog and the bunny were friends. I'm not joking... I think they might've been owned by the store nearby. I don't know - but I got pictures to prove it. :)

Okay, now that you believe me about the dog and the bunny... here are some other random pictures of northern Cyprus. (below)

The wall in the picture just below is an example of what the wall looks like all around Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. It's called "the walled city".

Classroom: Steps of Intercession 02-13-07

Steps of Intercession 02-13-07
Mary

Is it intercession when we pray for anything in particular, like for the school or for family?

When you’re doing intercession, it’s okay to have a theme, providing the leader of the group has approved the theme. So if you were praying about the school or something else, you would be silent and wait for the Holy Spirit to tell you something about the school to pray for.
You’re not asking God about your particular needs. For true intercession you don’t have list of things to pray. That’s not relying on the Holy Spirit. That would be prayer and petition, you’re praying for your needs.

7 Steps of Intercession

1. Be Still
Worship and praise Him for who He is. Read a psalm or any other scripture the Holy Spirit directs you. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 48:10)

2. Be Clean
Take time to let the Holy Spirit search your heart before God and respond to His prompting. Accept now God’s cleansing forgiveness. “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John v9)

3. Be Armed and Armored
Arm yourself with the all-powerful name of Jesus and the Word of God. Put on the full armor of God using Ephesians 6:10-18. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

4. Be Submissive to the Holy Spirit
Put away all pre-conceived ideas and thoughts concerning lists, burdens and needs. In faith ask the Holy Spirit to empower, direct, and pray through you. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight.” (Proverbs 3:5)

5. Be Obedient
Now in complete silence and obedience speak out what He brings to your mind and express it in prayer; put away any fear of man that holds you back. “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22)

6. Be Steadfast
Give the Holy Spirit time to fulfill in prayer ALL that God reveals concerning the immediate prayer burden. Do not move onto another concern until the Holy Spirit or the word of God gives direction. “Continue steadfastly in prayer being watchful in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 4:2)

7. Be Thankful
Praise and worship Him for all He has revealed and for His presence with you. Hallelujah! “Whosoever offers praise glorifies me” (Psalm 50:23)

Jude v25
to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Classroom: Intercession 02-12-07

Intercession 02-12-07
Mary (guest speaker from Cyprus Day 1 of 2)

Never disregard something the Lord says to you during intercession time. It’s something where you step out into an adventure.

Question from Melissa: “How could you understand that this was God calling you to intercession and not just your imagination?”

Mary’s answer: Because of the preparation for intercession (which I’ll be going through later) – it’s all about submitting your prayer time into the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So if your faith in that submission-- because you step out in faith to say that “God, we have cast out the enemy, and whatever comes we know it’s from you,” you step out in faith. You don’t just rely on one thing. Just because somebody has a picture, you don’t rush out and say “yes, that’s what God wants us to do.” It’s the Spirit and the Word – you need biblical back-up as well. That’s why, when you’re in a group, you need agreement – so you have the Spirit, the Word, and agreement. So you don’t just go out on a wild, imaginative spree. You have to be in agreement together that this is what the Holy Spirit is telling you. You have to share in the experience.

[In these ways, God confirms what the Holy Spirit says to you.]

A lot of prayer times of intercession are just between me and the Lord. Being a solitary intercessor – you get to know the Lord quite intimately.

If you’re an intercessor, you’re an intercessor whether you’re on your own, or in a group.

Melly: “Is it possible that you hear your own mind asking you to pray for something and not the Lord? And is it bad if you pray for things from your own mind and it isn’t from the Lord?”

There is an entire seminar in these questions – but I will try to answer briefly and we can go back to it later. I have never heard an actual voice; but my husband has heard. And he looked around wondering why nobody else heard it because it was so loud. The only way I can explain it is to say that I know it when the Lord is speaking to me. It’s in my “know” – and I know I need to write it down. I know it’s His voice because I know Him. The only way to get to know His voice is the same as when you get to know a friend’s voice. And the only way you get to know someone is by spending time with them. The time you spend with the Lord is the most important time you will ever spend. The time you spend reading His word is the most important time. After you’ve spent time reading His word, you know, and you communicate with the Living God. I know in my life, if there have been times when I’ve been so busy to miss that time – everything seems to go wrong. It’s like if you have a good friend and you don’t bother speaking to them for a while, you miss them and they miss you and when you speak to them again there’s great joy in that. And if you’ve been filled with the Holy Spirit, you recognize His voice even more. I was born again a year before I was filled with the Spirit. I was doing a lot – reading and studying – working for Him. After I became filled with the Spirit, I was working with Him. That was difference. I was working for Him instead of with Him. And we get very tired working for Him – but when you work with Him it gets exciting.

Melly: “So it’s like… practice-- ?”

Yes. I’ve been with Him for 25 years and I’m still practicing.

Melly: “It won’t always be big things, right? We’ll be fine putting our prayers into little things—“

Uh-huh (yes).

Chris: “I know God wants us to pray intercession in groups and on our own – but would you say that one is better than another at times? Would you say that there are certain times when you should seek intercession in a group rather than alone – or the other way around?”

I will answer that in the next session because that’s what I’ve been planning to do.

You need to go through the Bible and look at different examples of intercession because there is a point in it – it’s God’s point. And we are told to do it. So it’s back to obedience. You don’t question Him (before being obedient) [but you can question the purpose during obedience].

[If God says to do it – it is good and it has a reason and a purpose. It has a positive effect. Intercession is another way we can be a part of God’s plan.]

Part of intercession is repentance – and humbling ourselves is not easy, especially is a church leader. So answering your question: In faith I believe that our intercession helped and it was encouraging [it probably taught something and brought them closer to God.] But I don’t question God because He is God and we have an enemy – who seeks to destroy. That is what Spiritual warfare is about.

Mankind gave a perfect world away – and it’s been getting worse ever since. God has given us free will and we cannot escape the consequences of that free will.

Isaiah 19:19-21
In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD at its border. It will be a sign and a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry to the LORD because of oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and deliver them. And the LORD will make himself known to the Egyptians, and the Egyptians will know the LORD in that day and worship with sacrifice and offering, and they will make vows to the LORD and perform them.

Jesus said “when you pray” – he did not say “if you pray” – and Paul is saying the same thing.

1 Timothy 2:1
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,

So intercession is different from prayers, supplication, and thanksgiving. When you bring your list – that is prayer and other things. They are all important. There is no scale going up steps – they are all equally important. Thanksgiving and prayer, thanksgiving and worship – and we may need to bring our own requests to God. Obviously we all have our own requests for our future and family and other things. We need to bring those before God. He is our loving Father, and when we come to prayer or prayer meetings, He is a loving Father and He wants us to bring everything to Him. Where ever there is a prayer meeting, God is there. And Jesus covered that prayer when he taught us how to pray.

“Our Father in Heaven” he began by acknowledging God
“Kingdom come”
“daily bread” all our needs, not all our wants
for forgiveness… and as we forgive others we will be forgiven
help us to resist temptations
keep us from the evil one

So what is the difference with intercession? Intercession is the expression of a relationship. And in that relationship, God is showing you whether you have a dream, or a picture, or a word in your heart.

This relationship grows from a friendship into a love affair. I’ve been doing a study into a song of Solomon – or song of songs. It’s a love story, and it’s how He loves me. He is my lover and I am His. It’s getting deeper into the relationship every time.

Intercession is a complete surrender.

After the Lord’s prayer, Jesus was with his disciples. He was saying that it was so important that He died so the Holy Spirit could be sent to earth.

No self effort, please. Don’t try to bring something that “He told you” just because you remember. I’ve sat in an intercessory meeting and haven’t heard anything at all; but you’re working as a team. It doesn’t matter. You’re there to pray. Nobody sees what you’re doing in intercession. It’s a hidden ministry.

Melly: “Sometimes when we pray, God gives people Bible verses to read or share with others. How does that work? Does God give us Bible verses that we know of and we remember to share them? Does He give us a verse and a number and we don’t know what it says but when we read it, it suits the situation? Do we just open our eyes and open the Bible and where we open it is where we read?”

My answer to that is “Yes”. It’s all of those things. We’re all different and it works in different ways; He wants to bring that difference out.
We all need to be interceding. There’s no question about that. Just like evangelism, we all need to be sharing and spreading the gospel – some people get a special calling in those areas, though, to give them more attention.

Classroom: Hearing God's Voice 02-09-07

Hearing the Voice of the Lord 02-09-07
Gabby (guest speaker from Lebanon Day 5 of 5)

To be able to hear God’s voice, we have to believe that God speaks so we will listen. We have to believe that God wants to communicate with us and that He does and that He is willing to.

God is always speaking to His people. Through out the entire Bible, God is speaking to His people – from Genesis to Revelation. God speaks to His people. He is not silent. Even nature speaks to the glory of God. We said yesterday that God said, “My Kingdom is a Kingdom of relationships.” And a relationship involves two way communication. It’s like a relationship with my wife.

Some people say God doesn’t speak. If He gave you the ability to speak, then He speaks too. If it’s not a two way relationship – then it isn’t a relationship. God loves us and He wants us to hear His voice. He wants us to hear His voice telling us how much He loves us. Let me tell you this – if you are a born again Christian, then you definitely heard His voice. And if you didn’t hear His voice, then you are not a born again Christian. You’re here because God spoke to you. And one thing that needs to be in your mind. It is your right to hear the voice of the Lord – as a child of God. There is no Christian here on earth who does not have the right to hear the voice of the Lord. Hearing the voice of the Lord is a privilege. Other religions do not have this privilege. Did you know that? Do you know why other religions don’t have this privilege? Because their gods are dead; and our God is alive! Only the grave of Jesus is empty – because He is alive! And it’s not hard to hear the voice of the Lord – it’s hard not to hear the voice of the Lord.

Proverbs 16:9 The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.

John 10:14 I am the good Shepard.

We are the sheep. And he says, “My sheep hear my voice.” So he speaks to us, and He wants to lead us to green pastures (Psalm 23). He speaks to us. God doesn’t just tell us where to go and then say, “okay, I’ll meet you there.” No, he meets us there and also guides us along the way. Because He’s alive.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder, but a God of peace.

In your life when there is a lot of confusion, you have to understand that this is not God.

Why does God speak to us?
- To Guide us
- Relationship
- Help our faith and belief
- To show us He is close to us
- So we can be His messengers
- To show His love
- Because He is a living God

Examples in the Old Testament of God speaking to Abraham
Abraham – The Bible didn’t say how God spoke to Abraham. This is good. I like this. God spoke to Abraham, and Abraham heard the voice of the Lord. We don’t know how, but we know that Abraham heard the voice of the Lord. If God were to say how He spoke to Abraham, maybe we would think that these are the only ways that He speaks to us.

Many people say, “How can I be sure that this is God? How can I be sure that this is the voice of the Lord.” You will know it when He speaks to you. And nobody will be able to tell you that “this is not the voice of the Lord” because you know deep inside that it is.

Jacob heard God in a dream Gen 28:10-16

Moses heard God’s voice Ex 3:2

Balaam (donkey) Numbers 22:28-30

Hebrews Ex 13:21

Gideon heard God through a sign (morning dew) Judges 6:37-40

The sign wasn’t just a sign that you knew would happen – it was a sign that was almost impossible.

We did not go to flee, we went because we were called. We did not understand why we should go, but now when we look back, we do understand why we went. You don’t do things to please people, you do things to please God. The decisions you make are very important. If you please people your whole life – your family or whoever, you will find yourself in a bad situation. Do things to please God. If I were trying to please my mom, for example, I would not be ministering here right now at all. And now my father is so proud of the way I’m ministering for the Lord. When you do things, do them to please the Lord.

When you start valuing God’s voice in your life – God will keep speaking to you. If you don’t value His voice or His guidance. He might stop – because you’re not hearing Him anyway, why would He speak to you?

The safest path is the Plan of the Lord. Jesus was never led by the need of the people. He would always go up to listen to the Father, and he would do. There were lots of people all around that were crying, “Jesus! Save us! Save us!” And Jesus would let them – and go up alone on the mountain. So it was never the desire of the people that Jesus satisfied. It was God’s plan.

There have been days when I have not had any money in my pocket at all. You know, I used to live this way when I was single. It was easy. No problem. Now I have a wife and a daughter – and it is hard. I want to feed them. I want to provide for them; yet we still live by faith. God provides for me and my family.

Gen 16:7 and Gen 19:15 – God has given His guidance through angels. Whenever God wants to say something supernatural – He sends an angel. Luke 1:28-34. Jesus speaks to Joseph in dreams. There is an audible voice when Jesus was baptized. Acts 13:2; 15:28; 16:6;

So how does God speak to us?

- Through the inner voice. This is the inner voice of the Holy Spirit within you. (Acts 8:29)

- God speaks to us through Angels

- God speaks to us through animals (Numbers 22:28)

- Gifts of the Spirit

- Prophesies

- Words of knowledge

- Words of wisdom

- Other people

- Prophets

- Other (Acts 21:10)

- Dreams (Matthew 1:20)

- Visions (Acts 16:9)

- Bible or The Word of the Lord (Daniel 9:2)

- Circumstances (Acts 11:16)

- Creation (Romans 1:20)

- God can speak through ANYTHING (example: we don't know how He spoke to Abraham)

Beware of counterfeits. Because Satan knows that the voice of the Lord is so valuable, he will try to counterfeit it. (Acts 8:9-11)

Beware of fortune telling.
Beware of astrology science.
This is not God.

God will not speak to you in a way that contradicts the Bible. He will not go against His word or promises. His Word will guide you to truth and freedom while Satan’s word will lead you into bondage and away from God.

Fast for assurance, that you will have guidance from the Lord. Do not presume to know what God will say. Come with a humble heart. A humble heart is the key. Come before the Lord and ask to hear Him. Seek a sign. Seek a confirmation. How do you know if this is the Lord speaking to you? Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Train yourself. You know voices that are familiar. You know the voice of your father and mother. Sheep know the voice of their Shepard.
Fear of God, not fear of man. Be a pleaser of God, not a pleaser of man. If you’re the type of person to be a man-pleaser, you will be mislead. If you want to please your parents, your family, your friends, you will be… I don’t know where.

Obey. Obey. Obey. If you don’t obey, God will not speak to you. Seeking guidance with no intention of obedience is like seeking self destruction. Guidance for the future comes with obedience in the present.

Don’t come to the Lord with conditions. Come with a desire to obey whatever He says. “Lord if this woman is not from you, I am ready to leave her. If this man is not from you, I will leave him.

These steps are in the book, “Is that really you, God?” The book is excellent if you want to know how to hear the voice of the Lord.

- Submit to His Lordship

- Confess your Sin and seek a clean heart.

- Ask Him to help you silence your own thoughts and desires, even of others. Our minds are full of all these thoughts coming from ourselves and others. God has given you a good mind to use, but right now you want to hear from the Lord.

- Resist the Enemy. “Satan, be silent – in Jesus’ name.”

- Expect Him to speak to you.

- Forgive others. Forgive those who hurt you.

- Wait. Wait, the Lord will speak to you.

As a group, God can give us bits and pieces of the big picture. So when you take them and piece them together you can see it. Even if it’s funny, just say it if you know it is from God.

Classroom: Worship 02-08-07

Worship 02-08-07
Gabby (guest speaker from Lebanon Day 4 of 5)

To know about worship is different than being the worshiper. Being the worshiper is something we need to work on. John 4:23 says the Word is seeking for new worshipers. God’s Kingdom is a Kingdom of relationships – of lovers.

We are created with a desire to worship. God created us with a desire to worship him.

Each human has a desire inside to worship. And if we don’t worship God, we will worship something else. And if we don’t worship God, we’ll worship drugs, sex, money—or something else. Peoples that have had no contact with the outside world/civilization, when they are found, always are worshipping something – a rock, the sun, something. If we don’t worship something we’re going to feel emptiness.

Ps 45:10-11 Worship
Ex 4:31
John 4:24
Act 18:7
Rom 12:1

Worship is the uppermost place for a relationship with God. Praise is the uppermost way of prayer. Worship is putting our relationship with God into practice. Worship is putting your intimate relationship and life into practice. Only God is worthy of worship.

Gen 22 – Abraham went to worship God. God asked him to come and worship him. He asked him to sacrifice his only son – and not just the only son, the promise of God. Not just the son, the future, the ministry – everything. So when God asked Abraham to go worship Him, the first act was obedience. If you’re not obedient, you can’t worship. You’re not a worshiper. And you might say, “how can I know if I am obedient or not? How can I tell?” It’s easy. Are you obedient here on earth, to the people around you, to the authorities? I know people who enjoy disobedience. Obedience is a heart attitude. If you cannot obey people or authorities here on earth, how can you obey God? How can you be obedient without the heart and attitude of obedience? Obedience is a heart attitude, you know? If you don’t obey your leader on earth when you see, and your authority on earth that you see – how can you obey your Father in Heaven whom you don’t see?

I don’t want to be a disobeying person. I want to be obedient.

God will ask you to do things that are not logical. If you trust Him, things will work out in the end.

The second act of Abraham was giving. To be a right worshiper you need to be a giver, too. The Lord will not take from you without giving back. If you have a need, I have a challenge for you – go and give. If you need affection – go and give some affection to somebody. If you need money, go and give some money.

Another act of worship in the Bible – Matthew 2:11

Results of worshiping God
Better understanding of God
Satisfaction – fill your emptiness with God’s love through worship. One way to rid yourself of sin is to fill that space with worship to God.

Hear his voice – Luke 10:38-39
People think that if they serve the Lord by starting a new ministry they will grow closer to the Lord. They are wrong. Just worship Him, without any effort.

It starts at the feet of Jesus. Start with Worship. Because when you worship you hear the voice of Jesus. The problem is we don’t listen when we worship. So stop, listen to Him, take His instructions, and you will know Him. When you worship face to face – your encounter will change. When people see Jesus in you – they will come to you. Because they need Him. A worshiper is easy to find. It’s easy to know if you are a worshiper or not. You can see it in their face, their talking, their acting – their heart is open.

Worship:
1- Romans 12:1 present a living sacrifice. A living sacrifice means this – with all my will, I offer everything. This is to die to yourself, to say, “Lord I don’t want anything for me. I don’t want anything for me. You are number one. I am not number one. I don’t care if I have money, or family, or anything. All I care for is you.” This is the living sacrifice. When you sacrifice yourself willingly. When you put yourself on the altar, willingly.
2- Kneeling – we kneel in front of God.
3- Ps 99:5; 132:7; Revelation 19:10 – be yourself. If you want to bow, or kneel, or prostrate – go ahead.
4- “Selah” from the Psalms. What is “Selah” (See-La)? Silence from music. Pause. It’s a time to receive revelation and direction. To reflect. To meditate. It’s a time to see in the Spirit. We have to do this in our worship time. Selah is a very essential part of our worship. This is not a time for a solo singing act.

Mary/Martha Luke 10:38-42 notice that Martha was the one welcoming Jesus. Mary was silent, quiet, sitting at his feet. Martha was so excited about Jesus, serving Him – so busy – trying to please Him. But Martha was distracted with much serving. Although she was serving Jesus, she was still distracted. If you’re so busy serving – you will miss the most important thing, which is having Jesus in your life. Mary is doing the one thing that is necessary – which is listening to Jesus and having him in her life.

John 11:1 Lazarus dies – we see Martha first, the one who loves to show up. She stood up and ran to Jesus. Most of the people were in the house and started following her. When she showed up, the first thing she did was blame him, “if you were here, my brother would not be dead.” She did not understand Jesus because she was not close to him. When you are close to Jesus, you understand him and you don’t blame him – because you know him. You know him very well. Jesus sent a message to the one who waited, “the master is waiting for you.” He sent that message to Mary. She waited and listened. The first thing that Mary did when she saw Jesus was fall on his feet. She went to the place of worship where she meets Jesus at – where she knows how to contact and communicate with him. It was a place of peace, where she could understand him. A place of reverence – the feet of Jesus. And the Bible says that Mary told Jesus almost the same words as Martha – and when Jesus saw her sad, he cries too. He cries and weeps with her. Then Jesus says, “okay, open the cave.” And who is the first one to object? Did you notice the faith of Martha? The “servant” of God? Then when the miracle was happening, she was the first one to oppose it. “No, don’t do it. It’s against logic. It’s against our culture.” Listen, it’s not enough to serve the Lord, guys.

John 12:1 Here is Martha again. She did not learn her lesson. Even though Jesus told her in words, “Martha, be careful. Do not go too far. By doing this you will be opposing me, sometimes.” But she did not pay attention. She kept on with these things. And here is Mary again. She wanted to be close to Jesus. She knew she would be serving him sometimes – but when the Master is in the house, she knows it’s time to be with Him. She gets the expensive oil and pours it on him. She is saying, “this is my man. This is my lover.” As if this were a marriage. And where did she put this oil? On the feet of Jesus. She did not marry him physically, she knew her Lord and Savior. She is worshipping. And the first one to speak against this is Judas. Jesus tells him to leave her along. He is seeking for real worshipers.

John 13:23 John was leaning on Jesus.

John 18:15 Peter followed Jesus and entered the high court with him.

God commands us to worship Him. But we don’t worship Him because He commands us, we do it because we love Him; we want to worship Him. We want to give ourselves to Him. It’s about what is happening inside of us. So then, why does God command us to worship Him? Because He loves us, too – and He knows how much satisfaction we gain from it and how much joy there is in knowing Him and He wants us to know more of Him – because He loves us. Listen, knowing God is the greatest joy there is. It’s the only satisfaction. It’s the greatest love – and it is the only thing that will last, even after we die. Don’t misunderstand me wrong when I say that we worship God because it satisfies us. It satisfies Him, also. He is happy when we worship Him – and that’s partly because He knows how good it is for us and how much we love it and gain from it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not about us. It’s about God. It’s all about God. Because God is so great – He is the greatest in all good. He is all good.

John 21:7 the disciples are tired. Jesus has been dead for some time. Peter is a leader. That’s why Jesus chose him. After Jesus’ death, Peter says, “Let’s go back and do the things we did before Jesus came. Fishing.” And Jesus came and said, “I did not call you to fish. You will be fishers of men.”

To be a worshiper, you need to love, and be let yourself be loved too. You need to know how to love and you to know how to be loved.

Questions
I know prayer and praise and worship are not exactly the same thing – but would you say that there can be prayer without praise or worship? Or worship without praise or prayer?

Prayer is talking to God. It might depend on what type of prayer you’re talking about because there are different kinds of prayer. Your prayers can be an act of praise.

When I worship, I don’t pray much because this is a time for the Lord. I believe praise should come first. You cannot separate them because praise always leads to worship. Praise brings you into His presence. So once you praise Him you cannot do anything but worship because you are in His presence. It is so great. When somebody says “I love you” usually we say, “I love you too”. When I lead worship – VERY rarely will I start with worship. I usually start with praise. This is because not very many people are in His presence to worship. You must be in His presence – you need to praise Him.

When we start with worship – many times we mourn inside. We make it about ourselves. “Oh, poor me.” But this worship time is not about us, so praise Him! Just praise – and then enter worship. Just to be clear, when we are in His presence – its okay to start with worship.

-Coffee Break-

The Presence of the Lord

How can we enjoy the presence of the Lord? What is the presence of the Lord?

A feeling. It’s knowing He’ll never leave us or forsake us. So if you’re a Christian – God’s presence is with us whether we acknowledge it or not. God is only present. He’s everywhere. But sometimes we experience the Holy of Holies – when we feel the thickness of his presence. I do believe that God is everywhere but sometimes we don’t put forth the effort to see Him.

Song of Solomon 3:1-4 On my bed by night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not. I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but found him not. The watchmen found me as they went about in the city. "Have you seen him whom my soul loves?" had I passed them when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her who conceived me.

She wanted her lover. “I am thirsty!” When you’re satisfied you don’t look anymore for water. You don’t look anymore for food. Never get satisfied. It’s wrong. Jesus is enough food for us every day. He is the same every day, and you can never fully know him unless you are God. He will always satisfy you.

What happens for people who wait and wait for God and he doesn’t show up? Maybe our expectations aren’t met – maybe they are not the right expectations. We need to know that God will show us. He will teach us. He will be there. It’s not waiting to see if He shows up – it’s waiting for when He will show up. That goes along with wrong and right expectations.

You can ask for high expectations – just not wrong ones. Ask for things you want – and receive them or not – fine – but NOT because you didn’t ask.

How do you know that was God? Because of the fruits. Jesus said we will know what kind of tree it is because of the fruits on the tree. Let me tell you, I was not expecting this to happen. I was not expecting it at all. I was surprised by God. It had never happened before – and never after.

Read: Song of Solomon chapter 5

I want you to take these two keys: thirst and expectations
If you know that He is calling you, you can expect His presence. He will meet with you. Expect God, but don’t limit Him with your expectations. Your experience with how He speaks to you may be different. If you expect Him in one way – maybe He wants to come in a different way! Maybe it is better that He comes in a different way. It is right to expect Him. It is wrong to expect the way of Him.

The journey in the desert from Egypt was supposed to take one week. The fact that it took 40 years was not God. It was their disbelief and their choices.

95% of Muslims that are becoming Christians – it is through dreams and visions. Sometimes healings. It is according to your need. How much do you need to believe?

We must believe that God is just. He gives according to need. He shows Himself to one person because He knows that’s what they need to believe. Others don’t need to see Him to believe. And even some people He knows that they will not believe even if they see Him. So He protects us by not showing Himself directly to them because if He showed Himself and they don’t believe – they would never believe. Instead, He just keeps seeking for Him.

If you want to SEE Jesus Christ, ask Him to show Himself to you. Ask for it, sure.

Classroom: What is Praise 02-07-07

What is Praise? 02-07-07
Gabby (guest speaker from Lebanon Day 3 of 5)

God loves us as much as we choose to accept His love?

Don’t let anyone underestimate you. If you are willing, God will use you. He used David when he was 16. What matters is not your age, but your calling. God can use you, just be willing. He is looking for people to work in His Kingdom.

What is Praise?

You are called to praise the Lord. If you don’t praise Him, there is something wrong in your life. Praise is not for heating up an atmosphere. It is for God alone. It is to worship and praise God. It is not to heat up an atmosphere or gather people at all – it’s to say, “Lord, you are worthy!” Some people think praise is to feel good… that’s wrong! Of course, the result of praise is that you’re going to feel good. That’s out of God’s generosity. You don’t praise Him to feel good. It’s not for our own happiness. It’s to make Him feel good – it’s for His happiness. You should not be the center of your praise, God should be the center of your praise. Don’t go to church and praise because you think, “I need it.” In that case, you are saying, “I am going to praise myself.” Praise is for God. It is to say, “Lord you are worthy! You are the King! Even when I am not worthy you are the King! You are the King no matter what! You are God no matter what!”

A lot of people think, “It’s okay if I come late to church, as long as I don’t miss the word of God.” Those people are selfish. They go to church to take something away from it and not to give to God. The church chooses to put praise first to put God first. To say, “we are not the center of this world. God is the center of this world.”

When we say, “It’s praise and worship time, why do we mean ‘it’s time to sing songs’?” Because that’s the Biblical way. Praise are words, and it is also music.

God’s character is stable. It doesn’t fluctuate. We fluctuate. So if we are down, that doesn’t make God less great. When you wake up in the morning not feeling well, maybe you’re sick or cold or out of money or your girlfriend/boyfriend breaks up with you—all of these situations will not change who God is. God is God, and He is ready to be praised.

Praise is a decision. It’s not something that is effected by how I feel now. It is a decision to put God first, put yourself away, and just come before the Living God and praise Him.
Psalm 104:33-34

Why do we praise?
To know Him better.
It pleases Him Ps 69:31
Ps 147:1

Isaiah 29: read

How do you praise?

Clapping as an offering to the Lord. Applause for the Lord. When you enjoy God and His attributes, character—
Praise by dancing. Ps 30:11; 149:3 Dancing is in us. Just look at kids when they hear music – they just start to move.
By lifting up our hands. Ps 28:2; 63:4
Lift up our heads. Ps 3:3
Kneeling 95:6
Standing Ps 122:2
Giving Ps 66:16; 116:12
Singing a new song Ps 33:3; 40:3

What would hinder our praise?

Lack of knowledge of God
Guilt feeling (don’t accept Jesus on the cross)
Our feelings: “I don’t feel like it” “I don’t want to” – ask the Lord to help you.
What will people think of us? Boldness. Fear. Our traditions – limiting ourselves to what we’re used to or taught (culture).

Classroom: Foundation for Praise 02-06-07

Foundation for Praise 02-06-07
Gabby (guest speaker from Lebanon Day 2 of 5)

We’re going to talk about the foundation on which we will build are praise. The place where we will build our altar of worship.

Recap: You must know God to worship Him. It’s not enough to know about Him, you must know Him.

We have to be careful about grumbling. This can lead to unbelief; and it can look different for guys and girls. Some grumble in their hearts – others with their mouths. We need to be careful about what we hear, no matter where we hear it. Protect yourself from grumbling. Keep your minds full of the word of God. If it’s not full of the word of God, something will come in its place to be in your mind. What other things is the world declaring? Sex. Drinking. What kind of message does this send? To have a nice life, to have a normal life – sex will make you happy. Drinking will get you accepted into the community. This is how you should act. And before you know it, people are starting to get sad because they’re not having sex. And I’m not even talking about non-Christians. I’m talking about Christians. I’m talking about committed people. I know many Christians who were unhappy because they were not having sex. I met people who got married to anyone because they were unsatisfied – then got divorced after some time. War is another thing. I don’t know about the West, but in the East the news is all bad. I don’t even know why the call it news, they should call it bad news. In Lebanon especially, I’ve just decided not to watch the news anymore. And you’re talking to a news addict. I could not pass a day without looking at the news. I stopped because I am asked to speak to people; to stand in front and give talks, and I was depressed.

In Iran, a statistic is that 60% of the people are atheist. In Iran. Why? Because they don’t want anything to do with God. They are unhappy, and they believe their happiness.

Matthew 6:24 – No man can serve God and money.

Happiness is not something that’s available to buy. That’s why see a sad church. A sad Christian. Be careful because when you are sucked into money you could lose your calling as Christians. What’s our calling?

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Isaiah 43:21 the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.

When you go on the streets and declare the name of Jesus – so many people call it evangelism. I call it praise. That’s what the Bible calls it. I saw many people evangelizing in a terrible way. Who would go and just try to defend God. They would say to themselves, “how can I convince them?”

Praise is a lifestyle, it’s not a session. When we come here, it’s not like we say – “Let’s praise Him now.” – No, we’re called to praise Him every minute of the day. We’re called to be a proclaiming the goodness of the Lord every minute.

Psalm 145:2 Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

Instead of praising, what are we doing? Grumbling. Did you spend time thanking the Lord or praising Him for what He has done? And why do we grumble? Because we don’t have a thankful heart. This is something we need to develop. We need to have a heart of thanksgiving.

Numbers 14:26

If you grumble you’re not going to have a good time! Before my DTS, my life was up-down-up-down. Then I decided to give the Lord 6 months of my life. And my relationship with Him skyrocketed. Be careful of your grumbling. Be careful of your words and thoughts. We are not called to grumble we are called to praise!

Remember Israel when God brought them from Egypt? They grumbled. They grumbled all the time and they did not enter the promised land. Grumbling was accompanied with doubt and scorn. They didn’t enter the promised land and they didn’t have rest. They died in the desert. I made a commitment not to surround myself with grumblers. I know people that grumble all the time – and they suck the joy out of everything.

The Lord is able to turn our grumbling to joy. Awake my heart!

It’s funny. I’ve forgotten what life was like without Jesus; and it might sound funny but I have to keep reminding myself. It was Hell. It was terrible. I would not want to go back there.

Revival starts on the inside. Many people are waiting for a revival, for themselves and the church – like revival is something that’s stuck in a jam. “Lord! We need revival! Bring us revival!” WAKE UP! WAKE UP, SOUL! Stop grumbling! Put your eyes on Jesus! Instead of putting your eyes on the media and other things – put your eyes on Jesus!!! You will become what you say. You will become the revivalist. You will become the soul for the lost. You will go to your family and make a difference, your church, your outreach – where ever you go, you will make a difference.

All you need is Jesus.

We are called to proclaim His praises. A sad heart is not a good example. I mean, do you want to be in a sad place? I don’t. I want to be where people are happy, and happiness only comes from the Lord. The joy of the Lord is our strength. We will be like magnets. People will be draw to you – because you are happy. Because you are praising Him. We need to ask the Lord to forgive us for grumbling.

Take 3 minutes. Write down the things you need to do to stop grumbling. I know one thing for me was to say, every morning, “You know Lord, you are good!” So I need to remind myself of the goodness of God daily.

1 Chronicles 16:4 Then he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the LORD, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel.

David appointed people just to thank the Lord! One of the Levite’s duties was just to thank the Lord day and night!

If we don’t thank the Lord, we will take it for granted. Even the air you breath is a gift from God.

We are not grateful. We don’t know how to say thankful. I remember a congregation, and the pastor said, “Hey! There are 100 people! Everybody say one thing to praise the Lord!” And then everyone was silent. Still.

Take a piece of paper and write down as many things you can think of on what you can praise the Lord for. I’m telling you, if you start thinking this way, you will need more than one piece of paper.

When you’re going through a hard time and you can’t just find God. Try this – start thanking Him. I tell you, your mood will be different. It will be like oxygen coming to you – and you will find it gets easier to praise Him. And suddenly you will find that your eyes will be opened to the spiritual things around you. And you will live victoriously; and you will have a successful life. What is the key? Thanksgiving and praise to the living God.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving. Enter His courts with praise.

(Psalm 100!)

And this is a lifestyle, you know? You need to teach yourself this daily. Teach yourself to be thankful for everything – let God teach you to be thankful for everything. We can never say thank you enough to strangers, friends, leaders, and especially to God. And as you approach life in this way – you will find that your attitude will change. You will become more positive, more gracious.

Romans 1:18-23

I always asked the Lord, “what will happen to me after I die” until He answered me: “nothing.” Life will keep on. People will be sad for a short time – they will look at your picture and remember you. They will continue eating, getting married, and being happy.

We are not the center of the universe! We are not the center of the Universe! Life will keep on.

Praise and thanksgiving:
1 Chronicles 16:8-12
Job 1:21
Psalm 18:17
Psalm 30:8-12
Psalm 32:5
Psalm 28:6
Psalm 34:2
Deut: 32:4
Isaiah 30:20-21

1 Corinthians 1:4
2 Corinthians 2:14
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Colossians 4:2
Ephesians 5:20

1 Chronicles 16:34 – Give thanks to the Lord for He is good
Luke 17:16 – 10 lepers were healed, only 1 came back to say thank you. I think the Lord put this in the Bible to show us that we don’t say thank you enough. As soon as we get this thing we’ve been praying for, we forget to go back and say thank you. We’re too busy cheering and celebrating! We don’t even say thank you.
1 Corinthians 15:57 We give thanks to the Lord for the victories we have in life.
Colossians 4:2 Thank Him for answered prayers
1 Chronicles 16:8 Thank Him because He is great
Ps 111:1-2 Thank Him so everyone else knows He’s great
Colossians 2:7 Thanksgiving keeps our mind on Christ and on others.

After salvation and my life – the best gift I ever had from God is my daughter. When I think about my daughter – I can’t understand why the Father would send His son to the cross? If it had been me, I would have sent myself. But that wouldn’t have been enough. It’s easier for me to send myself than to send my daughter. For God the Father to send His Son, that shows a bigger sacrifice. It’s never enough to say “thank you” for that.

If you want to be happy, you have to be thankful. When you are having a bad time – you THANK Jesus because you KNOW He will do something about it!

Why do we give thanks to the Lord? We remind ourselves that everything good comes from Him. He deserves the credit and glory. We acknowledge that there is no coincidence in what we pray for and the good things we receive.

Even if you work, don’t take it for granted. It is a gift from God! The people in your lives, everything – a gift from God! If you rely on a very rich person to provide for you, even they might be out of money sometime or they might befall some tragedy. Then you will be out of a job. No, my friend, rely on the Lord! And Him alone.

Three (of many) Bible references of reasons to be thankful to the Lord:

Psalm 50:23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!"

Ps 92:1-2 It is good. It is good to thank the Lord.
Psalm 9:1
Colossians 3:15 Be thankful in ALL situations
Philippians 1:3 Always think of good thoughts. You have to be thankful all times of the day.
1 Chronicles 16:7
Ps 147:7
Colossians 3:16
Psalm 100:4
Psalm 116:17 by GIVING – money, time, gifts, effort, prayer
Colossians 4:2
Psalm 111:2
Psalm 119:7 Living in obedience to the Lord
Colossians 2:7
2 Chronicles 32:25

Why do we do 12 weeks of lectures and then 10-12 weeks of outreach? Because we don’t want you to be full of information. The key is in your actions – what you do – how you serve. We want you to apply this knowledge for the glory of God!

Right now if you had a cure for cancer, what would you do? Scream? Go door to door? Be on TV? Share it with everyone? You wouldn’t keep it in your pocket. This is what we have. We have the medicine that the world needs. People need you; they need your message. They need to hear your experiences. They need the medicine. I feel honored that the Lord chose me to carry this medicine around. I honestly feel honored. I’m honored.

The exact middle of the Bible is Psalm 118 – and it says give thanks to the Lord

Classroom: Worshipers 02-05-07

Worshipers ~ 02-05-07
Gabby (a guest speaker from Lebanon)

We are going to bring out the worshiper that is inside of us. Each one of us was created to be a worshiper. This is not my idea; this is a very biblical idea. God created us to be worshipers. What we need to do, is we need to help this worshiper come out. This is something that happens on the inside. I cannot make you a worshiper, but I can encourage you to be a worshiper.

Worship comes from the inside. If you don’t fix things on the inside, you can’t worship. That’s why I can’t just tell you how to worship. If you don’t know God enough, you can’t worship Him. What do you mean do I know God? Of course I do. But I’m not just talking about knowing who God is. I’m talking about knowing Him. If you walk down the street in the Middle East, 99% of the people will say they know God – but most do not know who God is. If you don’t know Him, you cannot worship Him. If you don’t know Him, your worship will be more of a religious act, because you grew up and were raised in a Christian family. So you need to know God well. You will learn about the Character of God and who He is. I believe this week will help you to know God and to worship Him.

Every day when I wake up in the morning, I proclaim this and remind myself, “God is good.” Because if you don’t believe in the goodness of God or if you even doubt that just 5% - you might think, “how could I love this God?” – I can assure you that you would not be able to worship Him right. Because how can you worship someone who you can’t trust? How can you worship someone who isn’t enough? You would be worshipping out of fear or obligation.

We need to worship every day. Why? Because we are human and we forget easily. It’s like King David, “Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” I keep reminding myself every day, all the benefits of knowing God.

Mth 2:1-11 An example from the Bible of people who know of God but don’t know Him. The Magi were not Christian – they were not Jews. They worshipped the stars. So they went to Herod and shared with him that they believed the King was born. Herod was king of Jews. But he had no idea what the stars meant or that a king would be coming, although as a Jew he was supposed to know that the Messiah was coming. So he called the chief priests and the scribes to inquire. So they said, “yes, of course, we know the verse!” And they quote it. They know the verse, but they don’t know the Father, who wrote it. So we might know the Bible by heart, we can quote from it, maybe we read it daily, but this does not make us a person who knows the Living God. Because if you are a person who studies, reads, and memorizes a lot – you can go into a discussion and beat anyone – but that does not make you a friend of God. By the end of the picture, we see only the wise men worshipping Him. The priests and scribes remained at Herod’s castle. So we need to know Him to be able to worship Him. You need to know Him in person to be able to worship Him. Why am I saying this? Because I want you to seek to know God. I want you to change the way you think – to change your mind, “I don’t want to know about Him, I want to know Him.” Don’t do this throughout the school – just fill out papers about God. Of course I want you to take notes, but what I’m saying is I want you to seek to come closer to God – to know Him. So let your prayer be like this, “Lord I want to know you in person. I want to know what you like and what you don’t like. I want to know how to make you smile. I want to see you face to face, Father.” One of the most beautiful pictures that God gives us to describe Him – we are the bride and He is the bridegroom. What a lovely relationship. I just think about how much I love my wife, because sometimes we love our wives more than our Heavenly Father – or loving our husbands more. Imagine my relationship with my wife, doing things just out of obligation. Imagine the alarm going off, “oh, it’s time to call her and tell her I love her again.” And then later, “I love you but I’m tired and I’m not sure if I can tell you I love you – but I love you.” If we can’t treat our wives/husbands this way – how about God? We treat Him the same way sometimes. We wake up in the morning, “hello, it’s time for quiet time.” – “oops, time is up. The school said there’s only 1 hour for quiet time.” You know the Bible speaks about the Lord, that He laughs and likes to have fun with us. The Bible speaks about Jesus that he cries and has tears sometimes. He gets sad, He gets angry, He loves, and He hates. He is a person. So why do we treat Him like a thing? So if we don’t understand that He’s a person how can we worship Him? We would be bound. I won’t speak about that today – but I will speak about worshipping Him, free.

Judges 6:1-24
Sometimes people miss the first verse and they say, “Where is God? Why does He do this?” It is because they did evil in the eyes of God. In the Kingdom of God we have laws. We cannot break laws.

When God is not clear in your eyes it is not because He isn’t God. It’s because you chose to do evil in His eyes. So that’s what the Israelites did. They did evil, and then had to run and be in the mountains. They would plant and work hard and at the end of the day they would have no food to eat. They would be fruitless. Instead of asking, “what’s wrong?” they were adjusting to this situation. Although we see, and Gideon knew, that they had been promised a better life. And they heard all these stories of how good God was and what He has done for them. But knowing these stories did not help them – why, because they did evil in the sight of the Lord. There are many people that go to church and worship other gods. They worship sex, or power, or money – there are many idols on their altars. I want you to understand, at least, that this could happen to you when you do evil in the eyes of God and then do nothing about it. When you adjust to your situation – or when you put on a mask. You know deep in your heart that something is wrong but you choose to ignore it. Instead of just repenting, and fixing things, you just ignore it. And many of you are there now. And maybe some of you are even worse. And you’re crying out, “Lord! Where are you?!” Instead of having celebration, or times of worship, or an intimate time with God – you’re just angry with Him. You can’t worship. You can’t praise. You can’t rejoice, because there is a deep hurt inside of you; there is a cry inside of you, “Lord, where are you? Where are you?” God’s mercy is so great; it’s new every morning. Even while they were living away, ignoring Him, when He cries out to them, he sends them a prophet. A prophet has the word of God.

We need to remind ourselves of God and His goodness every day. When you wake up, don’t just get up and have a coffee. Start reminding yourself of what God has done for you the day before, or what He is doing.

When you keep your eyes on Jesus, when you keep your eyes on the Lord, it’s easy to praise Him. And when you praise Him you see a new dimension of God. And when this new part of God comes over you, your faith will grow! And when your faith grows – things will happen in your life! When you take your eyes away from Jesus, your mind will be full of doubts. It’s very easy to come and just put lies in your mouth. If I keep my eyes on my friend, even if you tell me his friend is white, I will say, “no, it’s black.” But if I leave and you call me up and say, “his hair changed in a day. It’s white now.” I wouldn’t know. I would doubt. I would wonder, “is his hair white or is it black?” So God did a lot to remind them what He did for them in the past.

Today I want to encourage you to change. And when the Lord brings His words over you – act.

“Thank goodness the pastor is sick. I don’t like his preaching.” It’s not about preaching and filling your head with knowledge. When you go home, what are you going to do with these notes? Are you going to go back and live a normal life again? Or are you going to say, “Lord, I want to change. Help me Father.” And this change will not happen in a day. It may take a year, two, three, I don’t know. So this prayer should be every day, “Lord I want to change.”

And we see people back living in the caves. And one of these people was Gideon. He came back to get some wheat. I heard people say that Gideon was a mighty man of God. But he wasn’t. He was a coward, just threading wheat, secretly. He was not facing the Midianites. He was not facing the situation. He was secretly trying to live, to survive. He was a person full of doubts. He was a person who was far away from God. Even when an angel appeared to him, he was still doubting God. Why do people say he was mighty? Because God said he was mighty. God called him to be mighty.

People ask me, “why do you do this? Why do you go on the streets and share with everyone your relationship? Why don’t you just pray for a miracle – that God would just appear to everyone? Because if He appeared to everyone then everyone would believe. But this is not true. Many times I have prayed for people and they do not believe.

It’s very easy to be doubtful. Don’t underestimate this. You will fall if you do. That’s why I told you to remind yourself every day, “God is good. God, you are a good God. Lord, I don’t feel good today but I know you are a good God! It’s not sunny today, it’s rainy and cold but you are a good God!”

If you think He’s not good, that does not make Him not a good God. There would never be goodness if God was not good. There is goodness because God is good. In other words, the source of goodness comes from Him. So God is a good God – and Gideon could not see that until the angel led him to build an altar. He was doubtful of God and of himself saying, “I am the least of my brethren. Who am I to worship you? Who am I to serve you? Who am I?” When you have the wrong picture of God, this will reflect on yourself. If you’re doubting God, of course you’ll doubt yourself. So if you’re doubting God you’ll find yourself in caves. A coward Christian.

The turning point in Gideon’s life was when he rebuilt the altar. Then he became mighty. An altar is a place where you worship – where you present yourself as the book of Romans chapter 12 says, as a living sacrifice. “I am yours, Lord. Take me.”

When Gideon builds his altar, we see this beautiful thing happening. He calls God Jehovah Shalom. He experiences God as Jehovah Shalom. Prince of peace! When he was worshipping, he knew deep inside that God is the Prince of Peace.

Whenever you build or rebuild your altar, you’re going to have a revelation of God. In order to build your altar, you have to have a personal relationship with Him. I don’t know who else is on your altar, but if there are other God’s – you’re going to have to take them out. You’re going to have to do what Gideon did. Just put your eyes on Jesus. And when you do that daily, God will reveal Himself to you. And when you have a revelation of God and when you know who God is – then you will become a worshiper.

Exodus 17 – Jehovah Nissi

Genesis 22 – Jehovah Jirah

I feel honored to come and be with you today – but really if you’re not going to do anything about this then I would rather go home and be with my wife. This needs your cooperation. I would love to have a great time of worship with you at the end of this week. But I’m not going to give you a list. It’s not about knowledge – it’s about acting.

Maybe you need to go back and fix your altar. Maybe you’re doing evil in the eyes of the Lord – and you need to repent, and ask forgiveness, and stop walking this way. I want to say that I’m sure God will help you through that.

Spirit of religion – religious spirit

Something that we all would fall in. What is religious spirit? It’s something that is so like, or looks so much like God. It looks like worship but it’s not worship. It’s fake. And it is a result of knowledge about God instead of knowing God.

John 4:3-30

This is a beautiful story. I want you to ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes, to read between the lines. There are the Jews and there are the Samaritans. They were enemies, but for Jesus they were not enemies, because he is not religious. He sees them and loves them. He sees them as human. “You are Catholic, I am Evangelical. You are Baptist. You worship differently. You are different. This is how religious people think. “I am better. I have the best way. I have the right way.” Because religious people are not concerned about relationship. They are more concerned with the act of worship, like it’s an obligation that we have to do. “I was born this way! I was raised this way! This is my church! This is how we worship in my church! You cannot lift your hands up! Shame on you, you are different!” Listen, I am not saying that worshipping quietly is wrong. And I’m not saying that not lifting up your hands is wrong, or lifting them up. I’m not saying that dancing or standing still is wrong – I’m saying that your heart might be wrong. Because worship is something that comes out of your heart. You worship because you love, and you just do it the way you like. No one has the right to put you in a box and tell you that this is how you should worship. And this is why I didn’t start with ways you should worship. Later, we will look at the Bible at the ways people worshiped. These aren’t things you have to do to please somebody. It’s also not something you do just to please God – but we do it because we love Him. I seek new ways to worship God because I love Him, not because I want to please Him. Of course I would love to please God, but I please Him because I love Him, not just because I’m afraid and I have to. So it’s not about how you worship, but about why you worship. A religious person will be very much stuck in HOW you worship. So when you are in worship time – just leave people alone and just be yourself! Be yourself! Enjoy it, and be yourself! You’re not doing this to please people around you, and you’re not doing it because the school says this is a time of worship. This is the time when you get to come before the lover of your soul. This is a time when you can just do anything, anything, anything to express your love – I’m talking about anything. I’m saying this because I want you to be yourself before the Lord, to be creative. You can kneel, you can stand, you can dance, you can cry, you can laugh… sometimes we can express ourselves to each other better than we can express ourselves to God.

I love David in the Bible. Although he was a king, when he was with the Father, he acted so much differently. He would dance in front of the tabernacle. But his wife was so religions. She would say, “you’re a king!” But I want you to just be yourself.

Do you like people stealing your freedom? Stop putting your friends and others in a box. If you can’t take it, close your eyes. Everyone here is free to be themselves. Stop being religions. We’re free in the presence of the Lord. Even God Himself respects our freedom. If today you decide to leave this room and go back to your life, God would not even stop you. Although it breaks His heart, He respects your freedom and lets you. Worship is worship as long as it’s coming from our hearts. Come with a heart of, “I want to meet my lover.”

If you’re Catholic, Baptist, or any other and you know Jesus Christ and believe in him – you will be with me for eternity.

What is behind the religious spirit is pride. We need to humble ourselves. We need to approach this spirit with an opposite spirit and say, “I need to learn from these people.”

Open your eyes so you’re not drawn into traditions. You need Jesus to open your eyes. Jesus tells the woman she will be thirsty again. Traditions never satisfy.

Lots of people think church is a club. It’s a friendship club. They sit in back and wait for their friends to come, whispering, “lets get lunch after church…”

When there is sin in your life and you know there is sin in your life and you ignore it, you cannot be a worshiper. If you know of sin in your life and you keep it and don’t deal with it – you can not be a worshiper. I’m not talking about weakness. You may be weak in an area that you keep falling in. I’m talking about a sin that God is telling you to stop it and you’re not. You don’t want to. You’re not even putting forth an effort, thinking that you’re going to church and you’ll be okay. Your life will never be okay until you make that decision, “Lord, I’m weak and I need your help.” Many people just hide their sin. They just exaggerate their spiritual life, “look at me! I’m spiritual!”

This woman avoided the truth by bringing up a religions conversation. What did Jesus say to this woman, “you worship what you do not know.” Jesus says you must worship in spirit and truth. Not just one, with both. You need your mind and your spirit.

This woman came to the well at this time when nobody went. It was too hot at noon. She didn’t want to meet anyone. Jesus met her there and pointed to her sin, and told her that he can get her out of it.

John 4:28 – she left her jar. Woman, aren’t you thirsty anymore? No. You have the living water of Jesus. I don’t need to drink from Jacob’s well anymore.

Today, the question is, are you religious? If you are, you need to repent and ask the Lord for help. If you are, you cannot come before the Lord as a worshiper. You need to ask the Lord to break all of your traditions. We are no longer of this world, we are of heaven.
I don’t want to be effected by where I grew up or the way my fathers were worshipping. I want to effect them. Instead of adjusting to my community, I want my community to adjust to Heaven. Pray this prayer today when you’re alone, “Lord, free me from all traditions. Lord, I don’t want to be a Baptist anymore. I don’t want to be Pentecostal. I want to be heavenly. I want to have a relationship – a real one. And when I come before you I don’t want to stand before a religion. I am standing in front of a person – my bridegroom.

Pictures 1: Divided Cyprus

Cyprus is a nation torn in half. The history of it is complicated. Most of the people are Greek, and there are a large number of Turkish people, too. There was a lot of fighting between the Greeks and the Turks over this island, and a lot of people went missing, until 1974 when the United Nations stepped in and made a boundry/wall. People weren't even allowed to cross until recently - but now people can cross to either side if they have a passport. I haven't found the time to cross yet - but I will soon, for sure!!! I have plenty of time! The history is very interesting.; I recommend looking it up and reading more about it.

You guessed it! We're eating, here. This is what our dinners and lunches look like. :)

The Canadian boy and I. We're eating Greek food in Cyprus for the first time - it was SO good! :)

This is the church I went to when I first got here. A lot of people like it. It's official name is "The International Church" - a lot of the people that go here are refugees and people from all over the world. The service I went to was great - the roots of this church are anglican, although this church is not officially of the anglican denomination.

This is our room... actually this was the first few days we were there. Now it's a little messier. :) But it's not TOO messy... just messy enough to call it home.

That staircase leads up to where we live. The lower level is a church called "The Church of God of Prophesy" - it's non-denominational. Don't be misled by the strange name. It's a good church (Greek speaking). This is the back of the church, where there's a parking lot.

We are praying for one of the other YWAM ministries nearby, here in Cyprus. It's called "Media Village" where they produce Christian videos and things. There are only 2 students right now and one staff member. They come over and have dinner with us every night. The staff member is from Egypt, and the two students are girls, one from Switzerland and the other from Lebanon.

Classroom: Cultures 02-01-07

How we can understand each other and how that makes it easier for us to love one another.

Rather than a difference becoming a conflict, it can become a good experience to learn from. One thing I always remind myself of when something comes up that I don’t agree with or if it shocks me is that I have to remember that most people don’t mean to hurt or annoy me. The intentions are probably good, actually – or if they’re not good, then at least they don’t mean anything. So that helps me to remind myself when something comes up that they probably didn’t mean anything by that.

World View: A set of assumptions, either conscious or unconscious, about the basic make-up of the world and how the world works (or how the world “should” work, as the person thinks).

-Discipling Nations by Darrol Miller

Key influences on worldview:
Money (economics)
Geographical location/climate
Religion
Education/IQ/Media
Culture
Family background
Government/Politics
Gender
Sexuality
Personality
Experiences

A worldview develops more over time and it can be sculpted and changed; but it begins from birth. The strongest influence happens during childhood years. Everybody has a worldview. Some worldviews are more similar to one another, some are very different, and of course – everyone tends to think that their worldview is the right one.

It’s always good to understand each other and ourselves. We don’t want to put a blanket over all types of people but there are some good, safe generalizations we can make. It’s important to know that all the Middle Eastern countries are different from each other – and the European nations are also different. So when we say “western” or “eastern” we can still break that down – we are still dealing with extremes. God reflects part of himself into each culture. And then we have individuals. He also reflects other parts of Himself into individuals that are not necessarily in the cultures. For example, some cultures are very good in hospitality. Others are good in order or organization, or being open and honest. It’s just

Character traits that seem to be opposites but not in a good/bad sense:

Organization and flexibility
Sociable people – quiet people
Athletic – academically hard working
Imaginative/creative – practical logical
Conservative – Liberal
Leaders – followers/workers

Most of these are not a matter of right and wrong. Each of these are different. When it does come to right and wrong, we still can’t compare to other cultures. We need to compare to God and who He is.

Here, we were split into groups according to culture and asked to answer a couple questions about the culture we're from. Here's my group:

Group 2
US, Canada, UK

Define your own culture:
Based on Individual rights
Value Democracy
Drinking
Sexually liberated – legalized preference/choice
Sex is no longer private
Less family oriented
Families based on relationship

What can others learn from your culture?
Equality
Not judging others
Tolerance of other people and their choices

What might others find challenging?
Lack of cultural identity (multi-cultural)
Individual choice (drugs…)
Freedom to say whatever you want – even if it’s offensive

In the Middle East, people are thinking “what can I eat today, how can I feed my family, there is a strike today… western nations think about other things.”

The last few DTS schools, they have had a lot of struggles, challenges, and aggravation between the differences of cultures.

High-context Culture
(Formal)

- Generally ancient, old cultures (like the Middle East or Asia)
- More formal/traditional
- Less of a mix of cultures
- Honor/respect is highly valued in these culturesEverything matters, details matter, even the order in the way the food is made – or the order in the way you hang the clothes on the line

Low-context Culture
(Informal)

- Newer, more recent cultures (like the US and Canada) Even within these cultures, the west cost is low-context than the east coast.
- Informal, not so traditional
- More of a mix of cultures
- Comfort and convenience is a high value in these culturesAnything goes, doesn’t matter how you do it – only that you do it (within reason)

In all cultures, youth go through a period of low context (teenagers and early 20’s). A lot of them test the boundaries and try to break out – that sort of thing. Most of the time they revert back to their traditions once they get to a certain age. Something to note for people interested in missions: There are no low-context cultures in the 10-40 window.

Reference: Foreign to Familiar – a book that influenced this session. If you like the topic of different cultures and peoples, this is a good and very easy book to read.

Efficiency/Task Cultures

- Time is important, resources are important
- Run on logic, does something make sense or doesn’t it
- Words: You can say “no” and there are no hard feelings. If you say you like it – that means you like it
- Cultures put value on what you know, even though “who” you know is also important.
- Written communication is necessary (for legal or binding)
- Being on time is important
- Planning ahead is considered more efficient so that’s what most people are comfortable with
- The task is important more than being together. Tasks and social time are separate
- Show respect by being reservedIt’s a good day if you get a lot done

Relationship/People Cultures

- People oriented, warm and friendly
- Based on feelings (what is the nice thing to do? It is good to have a good relationship with people. If somebody asks you for something, it is more difficult to say “no” because that would show that you’re putting yourself first). Example, in Nepal when foreigners come in and ask for a guide in the mountains for a month – he almost can’t say no even though it will be very difficult to leave his family for such a long period of time
- Meaning of language can come from tone of voice
- Cultures put all value on who you know, and no value on what you know
- Oral communication is fine (for legal or binding)
- Being 5 or 10 minutes early/late is fine
- Spontaneity, take it as it comes
- Be together (work, study, doesn’t matter as long as you’re together)It’s a good day if you have good relationships with people

Group Cultures

- Everyone takes care of each other, and puts others first
- People are good at anticipating each other’s needs. With a person in Egypt, and her friend knew her need before she did. Looked at the fan and knew Naomi was hot before Naomi knew.
- What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine
- Person is always more important than the thing. You don’t want to reject somebody by telling them they can’t borrow your expensive/valued item.
- If you have your own opinion, you will look to what the best interest of the group is. Opinions are shared or compromised. It’s much more important to function as a group. If you want to say “no” to someone, you can’t just say “no” – you have to do so in a round-about way or it’s rude.

Individual Cultures

- Each person takes care of themselves and does not bother anyone else. It might look selfish – which it can be in the extreme, but if is not selfish because you’re taking care of yourself in order not to disturb others – appears opposite of good but is actually good, or coming from good motives.
- Privacy and personal belongings are highly valued
- What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours – it’s assumed that you’ll ask permission before taking other people’s things
- The thing can sometimes be more valued than the personSpeaking your opinion is normal and accepted. Not speaking for yourself is considered weak

There are many more of these cultural examples – these are just some that the DTS leaders feel are applicable to our group.
Culture is something you learn, personality is something God gives you naturally.

Practical application for understanding different cultures better for the people in our school, to save yourselves and others from hurt and frustration.

1. Pray for yourself and others, to see the good characteristics in these people that God gave them even though many things seem to be opposites.

2. Observe other people without forming an immediate opinion or judgment. When you see something happen, don’t immediately react. Think about it for a while; watch for more patterns for this person and other people – listen for the answer.

3. Be determined to think out of the box. Try to accept these differences without making yourself feel superior or inferior.

4. Try something new. You might like it that way better.

5. Remember that it’s not wrong or right – usually it’s just different. Of course there is such a thing as sin. I’m not saying sin is right. But when you look at these things, look at them in terms of culture. Ask God what He thinks, and for His insight.

1 Corinthians 13 – what is love? Take a look at each individual thing. Love is a choice. Take some time to meditate on each individual aspect of love and what it means.

A Comment about Outreach

The outreach is a lot of fun. We go out every Monday or Tuesday evening in Nicosia, in the manner that is described in the post called "Classroom: Intro to Outreach 01-31-07"

Every Wednesday night we have an "Open Night" where the students participate in some way (read a devotion, share a testimony... something like that) and we sing songs and hear a short message. When we meet people in the city through outreach, we invite them to this Open Night event. We've already met a few people and they're really cool and nice. One guy is a jounralist from Lebanon. Another guy is a student from Iraq - really very nice people with interesting stories. It has really taught us all a lot about not making assumptions about people no matter what their background is.

Also, a lot of people here do hate president Bush. This comes up on occasion when I mention I'm from America. People are quite angry with him.

If you haven't read the outreach post - go read it! :)

Classroom: Intro to Outreach 01-31-07

Intro to Outreach 01-31-07

We’re not going out to preach, be weird, make converts, or any typical thing like that. We’ll be going out to look, listen, and authentically care about people with Jesus’ eyes and Jesus’ ears. We’re going to do different things. Sometimes we’ll just take a guitar out and sing some songs in Arabic – you’ll be surprised how many people will come out. The next thing you know you’ll be talking to people from different places and relating with them, getting to know them. You’ll find things in common – look for those things, be open to those things, and be authentic, real. Listening is an important part of a relationship.
Ask questions that get people to talk about themselves, about their family. Examples: Do you have a family? What are you doing here in Cyprus? How did you come here? What do you like about Cyprus? What don’t you like? Normal, non-threatening conversation – avoid blunt statements such as “you need to repent!” – you need to care about people. Examine your own heart. Do you really care about this person? If not, maybe you should talk to somebody else. It’s okay. There’s no pressure. God really cares about people, and we’re just trying to join Him in that and allow Him to care about people through us.
Yes, honestly they do need to repent, but that’s no way to approach them about it. We need to do it with humility, not pride. Pride has no place in inviting people to Jesus. We’re all pilgrims on a journey. Develop an attitude of togetherness – we’re together in this, all of us, all of human kind. It’s a mess, but we’re all suffering in this mess. Take down that wall of “I’m better than you are”. Take down that attitude of “I’m right” – It’s not the spirit of God to say “I’m right”. All the arguments in the world have been started by two people saying “I’m right and the other person is wrong” – God is not asking us to be right. You don’t have to have your doctrine right to please God. You have to have your heart right to please God, thanks to Jesus. So you may get into disputes with Mormons, Muslims – and I hate to say it but Christians are some of the biggest arguers out there. So let’s be honest, Christians can argue amongst themselves with anyone, and each other, about the littlest things. If you find that happening – think to yourself, “Okay, now, how do I get out of this?”
Our God is a God of peace. We go for reconciliation and peace, not war. So we want to be at peace with this person even if we don’t agree with them. When you realize you’re getting into a heated dispute, bring peace into it by finding common ground. Find common ground by finding something you can agree on. Be inviting – if you can’t agree, invite them to a meeting to talk about things more. Ultimately it’s not up to us, we’re only there to offer ourselves to God. If we’re not helping, we’re a hindrance.

Primarily, men should talk with men and women should talk with women. If you find yourself talking to a person of the opposite sex, quickly steer them to a woman in the group. Don’t let them get the wrong idea.

Can you turn someone of the opposite sex over to another group member and then still remain in the discussion?
Yes. Absolutely. Group dynamics are a lot different, and having more than one person in the group changes the entire situation, so if you add another person to the discussion then the focus isn’t just on you.

In general when talking to a Muslim, do not do anything to offend Mohammad or the Koran, do not put your Bible on the ground (blasphemy), do not get into discussions on “what do you think of Mohammad” or “what do you think of the Koran”? In first conversations with a Muslim – stay away from conversations about the Trinity. Avoid that concept and word because Muslims have a very different idea of what that means than we do. Talk about Jesus, not George Bush. Weave scripture into your story/conversation. Nobody can argue with your story. Like the blind man going in front of the Pharisees… nobody can argue with your experiences (John 9:25).

Don’t feel any pressure. You don’t have a quota to meet… you’re “just going fishing.” And when you go fishing, you just throw your line out there and see who bites.

Classroom: Intercession 01-31-07

Intercession 01-31-07

The meaning of Intercession is that we pray for others but not for us. We pray for other countries, people, and/or special things – maybe this is why it is a little bit hard for us. When you pray you have to have faith that our prayer will do new things. It has to be led by the Holy Spirit because when we pray, our prayers should be coming from God.

10 Steps of Intercession

Praise God for who He is and for His ministry.
Hebrews 7:25

Make sure your heart is clean before God by giving the Holy Spirit time to convict, should there be any unconfessed sin.
Psalm 66:18; Psalm 139:23-24
It’s very important when you wait to hear God’s voice, to have a clean heart. Because when you pray, you need God to hear what you are praying for. So many times, our sin will hinder God from hearing our prayers (that are led by the Holy Spirit) Psalm 66:18 – you can say anything you want.

Acknowledge that you cannot really pray without the direction of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:26; Ephesians 5:18
Don’t say, “God this time I’m not going to acknowledge you I’m just going to pray by myself.” Understand that the Holy Spirit knows a lot more than we do – even more about us than ourselves. He will be telling you what is in God’s heart for the topic or the thing He wants you to pray for.

Deal aggressively with the Enemy. Come against him in the all-powerful Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and with the “sword of the Spirit”, which is the Word of God.
James 4:7
After you make sure your heart is clean, speak against the enemy in the all-powerful name of the Lord. Three minds in thought -Your mind, God’s mind, enemies mind. When you start praying to God, these three things come into your mind – so you pray to God that He would make clear His voice.
Die to all of your own imaginations, desires, and burdens for what you feel yo should pray.
Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 55:8
If you come to pray and you realize that something is bothering you or keeping you distracted/busy all the time, it is stopping you from praying. You are trying to get rid of your thoughts so you can hear God’s voice. The only thing remaining should be God’s voice. Proverbs 3:5-6: submit yourself to the Lord.
Praise God, in faith, for the prayer you will have. He is an amazing God and will do things that are in line with His character.
Hebrews 11:6
Maybe you will be struggling with this point. If your heart is sure that God wants to involve you with that, thank Him before you start, because you know that He really wants you to do that. And what we’re saying here is a step of faith, not logic. Without faith, you cannot please God.

Wait in silence, listening for His direction.
Psalm 62:5; Micah 7:7; Psalm 81:11-13
It’s very hard for people who like to talk a lot, to wait in silence for God and know when He is talking. Because those people, if they stop talking, their minds will be talking. This is a very important point that you wait before God so you will allow God to speak to you. If God gave you something very quickly – go back and just make sure! A lot of people are struggling that they cannot hear from God. And how come God talks to you all the time and doesn’t talk to me? Because, you don’t give Him the time to speak. Hearing God’s voice is not something you learn in one day. It’s not a horrible thing if you get something wrong. As much as you spend time with God, His voice will be that clear to you. Psalm 62:5 – a lot of time we don’t wait for God. We answer ourselves. And sometimes we only wait for seconds – we hear something very quickly, and we add the rest from our imaginations, then we thank God for the time and that’s it – we move on. When you get something very quickly, stop and go back; make sure it is from God.

In obedience and faith, utter what God brings to your mind, believing.
John 10:27

If possible, have your Bible with you should God want to give you direction or confirmation from it.
Psalm 119:105

When God ceases to bring things to your mind to pray for, finish by praising and thanking Him for what He has done, reminding yourself of Romans 11:36, “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.”

If you are praying for 3 or 4 things in one time, don’t try to pray for them in the same prayer but just pray for one and the rest of the group will keep praying and will move to someone else. Trust in God for the thing that He wants us to be praying for. Sometimes we pray and go through all the steps and sometimes we wait before God and ask Him what to pray for. Sometimes we’ll have something in our hearts to pray for, a certain topic or certain country – or sometimes people will give us topics will to pray for. Give each other time for praying and listening. If you are leading the group and you start praising God – give time for other people to go through the other steps. Sometimes you can share together in praising God. Just remember that we are a group in the Body of Christ and not everyone is like “me”. Some people might need more time to pray/listen.

Some people feel, “oh, I have to go through 10 points when I intercede… it’s too long. I forgot the 2nd point, I cannot go to the 3rd point!” But it’s not that difficult. When you start interceding, those things will be in your mind when you start interceding. You will hear from yourself before you hear from God. This intercession time is effective. One time, when listening to the Spirit, all 6 separate groups got the same country to pray for. It’s not something they created. I’m sure all of you will experience this – prayer makes a big difference. I (Ashraf) can tell you hours and hours of stories of how prayer does make a difference.

Does prayer work for most people? No. Most people do not know God.

Praying for yourself is okay – it is just not called intercession.

Sometimes we want to focus on the steps instead of the prayers. These steps are like guidelines or helpers. Like when you’re little and you have dotted lines to help you make a straight line – but when you can draw a straight line you don’t need the dotted line anymore.

Sometimes you want to pray for your brother. So you are determined to pray for your brother, and you’ve already decided. So you go into prayer without listening to God and without allowing Him to lead you in prayer.
