Classroom: What is Praise 02-07-07
What is Praise? 02-07-07
Gabby (guest speaker from Lebanon Day 3 of 5)
God loves us as much as we choose to accept His love?
Don’t let anyone underestimate you. If you are willing, God will use you. He used David when he was 16. What matters is not your age, but your calling. God can use you, just be willing. He is looking for people to work in His Kingdom.
What is Praise?
You are called to praise the Lord. If you don’t praise Him, there is something wrong in your life. Praise is not for heating up an atmosphere. It is for God alone. It is to worship and praise God. It is not to heat up an atmosphere or gather people at all – it’s to say, “Lord, you are worthy!” Some people think praise is to feel good… that’s wrong! Of course, the result of praise is that you’re going to feel good. That’s out of God’s generosity. You don’t praise Him to feel good. It’s not for our own happiness. It’s to make Him feel good – it’s for His happiness. You should not be the center of your praise, God should be the center of your praise. Don’t go to church and praise because you think, “I need it.” In that case, you are saying, “I am going to praise myself.” Praise is for God. It is to say, “Lord you are worthy! You are the King! Even when I am not worthy you are the King! You are the King no matter what! You are God no matter what!”
A lot of people think, “It’s okay if I come late to church, as long as I don’t miss the word of God.” Those people are selfish. They go to church to take something away from it and not to give to God. The church chooses to put praise first to put God first. To say, “we are not the center of this world. God is the center of this world.”
When we say, “It’s praise and worship time, why do we mean ‘it’s time to sing songs’?” Because that’s the Biblical way. Praise are words, and it is also music.
God’s character is stable. It doesn’t fluctuate. We fluctuate. So if we are down, that doesn’t make God less great. When you wake up in the morning not feeling well, maybe you’re sick or cold or out of money or your girlfriend/boyfriend breaks up with you—all of these situations will not change who God is. God is God, and He is ready to be praised.
Praise is a decision. It’s not something that is effected by how I feel now. It is a decision to put God first, put yourself away, and just come before the Living God and praise Him.
Psalm 104:33-34
Why do we praise?
To know Him better.
It pleases Him Ps 69:31
Ps 147:1
Isaiah 29: read
How do you praise?
Clapping as an offering to the Lord. Applause for the Lord. When you enjoy God and His attributes, character—
Praise by dancing. Ps 30:11; 149:3 Dancing is in us. Just look at kids when they hear music – they just start to move.
By lifting up our hands. Ps 28:2; 63:4
Lift up our heads. Ps 3:3
Kneeling 95:6
Standing Ps 122:2
Giving Ps 66:16; 116:12
Singing a new song Ps 33:3; 40:3
What would hinder our praise?
Lack of knowledge of God
Guilt feeling (don’t accept Jesus on the cross)
Our feelings: “I don’t feel like it” “I don’t want to” – ask the Lord to help you.
What will people think of us? Boldness. Fear. Our traditions – limiting ourselves to what we’re used to or taught (culture).
