Repentance
What is repentance?
Turning from sin to God, as a result of a change of mind and heart, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
We need to embrace repentance. This is when we start to see sin from God’s point of view. When Adam and Eve sinned, God’s heart was broken. In Genesis it doesn’t really say what emotions God went through – but He had to cast His creatures away from the Garden.
Ezekiel 18:30-32
"Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live."
Repentance is an act of our will. We made the choice to sin. Temptation came, and we allowed that thought to take hold of our lives. We choose to turn from God, so we need to choose to return to Him and repent.
Repentance is completely turning around from what you are doing. Repentance is not remorse, or regret, or sorrow, or penitence (I’m going to give more money to the church!). It is a total, 100% turn around; it is saying, “God I am truly sorry for what I did. I ask you to forgive me, I ask you to cleanse me, and I thank you for your forgiveness.”
Repentance includes:
- a conviction of sin (Psalm 51:1-6)
- Hatred of sin (Proverbs 8:13)
- Having sorrow for sin, not for its consequence (2 Corinthians 7:10)
Confession: Psalm 32:5
Longing for forgiveness: Psalm 51:1
Submission of life to God: Luke 14:25
Willingness to make restitution: 19:8
Guilt often results in repetition of sin.
Words describing repentance in the Old Testament:
Sighing, panting, catching one’s breath, to lament, to regret, to suffer remorse, to grieve, to turn about, to return.
Words describing repentance in the New Testament:
Changing one’s mind or purpose, make a change of purpose, to reform, to turn about or around (Romans 4:12, renewing your mind).
3 Wrong attitudes of repentance:
- Esau (Hebrews 12:16-17) – here, tears are not enough. There was no true repentance here.
- Judas (Matthew 21:1-5)
- King Saul (1 Samuel 24:17-18)
I believe that God would have forgiven each one of these men if they had truly repented.
Examples or real repentance:
The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:17-20)
Psalm 32:5
1 John 1:9 – take note of the “if” in this passage.
One question, do you know in your heart, not in your head, that God has forgiven your sins? Because so many Christians are not sure. They are doubting. Maybe that’s because you need to come to that place where you can forgive yourself and turn from your sins!

The Cross:
Not just something we wear around our neck, the cross is reality. 2000 years ago, someone – a man who was fully man – God who was fully God, came down to earth. There is no forgiveness without the cross. Isaiah 53 talks about Jesus dying on the cross. When God forgives, he forgets. Psalm 130:3-4
Restitution
Excuses we make to not reconcile with God
My sins have been forgiven (1 John 1:17)
Let us look at the old testament (Jesus fulfilled the law so I don’t have to do anything. Old things have passed away)
3 types of sins
Ø Secret sins (in our own hearts and thoughts)
q Reconcile this with God, not with the person who doesn’t know anything about it. It will bring more confusion.
Ø Private sins (against 1,2,3+ people)
Ø Public sins (affect a group of people)
Reasons for restitution
¨ For the sake of justice
¨ For the sake of personal guilt (you may be vulnerable after making restitution, but it is better to be vulnerable and totally forgiven)
¨ It is a road block to future sin (You think about it the next time and realize you don’t want to be in that situation)
¨ For the sake of healing
¨ For the sake of responsibility (You take the responsibility for yourself instead of blaming – the society the community other people other things)
How to make restitution
¨ Go to the affected person first
¨ Avoid shameful details
¨ They might feel guilty, but do not witness, JUST apologize (you’re not there to witness and share your heart about Jesus… just apologize)
¨ Be brief and clear
¨ Do it as soon as possible!
¨ Think through ahead of time what you are going to say or write
¨ Identify the sin involved, repent of the root cause, and confess the root, not just the fruit.
¨ Your words should reveal a true and broken spirit
Proverbs 28:13
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
