The Father Heart of God
In Amsterdam, we had a meeting about the global DTS and talked about ways to improve them all. Things that need to happen in the DTS more:
✘ Worship – a deeper understanding of worship and what it is
We live in a society where it’s “me, me, me, me, me” and young people don’t want to engage, they just want to receive – in the DTS worldwide
✘ Let’s go back to the word. Young people do not really know the word of God – even people in general.
✘ Talking about Jesus to people who do not know Jesus (that’s the new term, not evangelism. When we say “evangelism” it makes us think that we all need to be full time evangelists.)
We will talk about sin, repentance, and the Father Heart. So there will be a lot of applications. It won’t just be teaching from the front. It’ll be all sorts of different things, so I challenge you to be open to God. It’s not just like every other week. It’s not like last week, and it’s not like next week. This is a new week. So respond when God speaks to you. This is your school.
Romans 5
Sin came through Adam
The “reward” for the sin is death
Before the law, sin wasn’t very clear. After the law, the sin became clear.
When Jesus died on the cross we were not worthy, and sinners, but he died and gave us eternal life.
After Jesus came and died, sin was transformed into eternal life.
Romans 6 summary:
Should we keep on sinning so God can show us His grace more? No. If we are dead to sin – do not sin any longer.
When we were baptized, we died and were buried with Christ – then raised to new life through Jesus.
Christ died for sin once and for all
Christ died and was raised and will never die again
Christians have been raised from death to life
Do not let sin keep ruling our lives
We are under God’s grace and not the law
Are we afraid to sin? You are slaves of anyone you obey. You can be slaves of sin – or obedient slaves of God.
Now you are set free from sin and slaves to please God
Important things we got from it
V19 I am using these everyday examples because in some ways you are still weak.
- God took things away from us, but we are still weak to those things and are tempted to go back.
V20+ What advantages are in sin? You can choose sin, but what are the advantages? You can choose God and the advantage is eternal life.
Christ has the power to rule over our sins, so in turning to Him, we receive what the Father gave to Jesus – eternal life.
Romans 7
Marriage, the commitment and that she is not supposed to get married until her husband dies – it is a commitment until death.
Sin is in the nature of us all. Even though we want to do the right thing, it is still in us to sin – so we are prisoners of our sin. And Jesus is the only one who can get rid of the law of sin which is in us.
Sin is basically rebellion against God. In English, when we write “SIN” – there is the “I” in the middle. What I want. What I need.
Every nations have laws. Even nations and tribes of people that are walking around naked. Why do we have those laws? To stop us from enjoying life? To stop us from doing what we want? It is for our protection! Here in Cyprus, we drive on the left side of the road, and a guy from the States comes and wants to drive on the right side.
The Law of God in relation to sin. We all read Romans 5, 6, 7 – that God did not invent or create sin. It was not in His mind or a thought that He ever hard; something happened in the Universe. I need to give you some laws that you need to follow, in order to be protected and saved.
Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Because we have the law, we are conscious of whether we live to that law or not.
Romans 7:7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."
1 John 3:4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
God brought the law so that we could realize what we are doing wrong.
Romans 4:15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
If I am a father and I have children, and I do not give them laws – I tell them they can do whatever they want – you want to eat dirt? Mice? Grasshoppers? Go to bed whenever you want. Can I punish them, then? No. They can do whatever they want. But as a Father, because I love them and want to protect them, I give them certain boundaries. And that’s why God gave us the Law.
Do we have to follow the law today? “Oh, but I’m free! I can kill. I can commit adultery. I can steal my neighbor’s donkey.” And this is exactly what the world around us is doing. And this is exactly what we were doing before we met God. So why do we need the Law?
Lines were drawn for our safety.
God is a God of order. Look around you outside, at the mountains, the sea, the earth, the planets, the sun, moon, and stars. When God threw everything into the Universe, He created laws. Everything functions according to laws. If Mars decides to stop going around – something terrible will happen. Can you imagine if someday the Sun decides to stop shining one day? Chaos. That’s in Genesis chapter one. Everything was created by God, and there was order in that creation. Everything that God made was good – until God put man in the garden of Eden. And we don’t know how long Adam was alone until God put Him to sleep and created Eve. And Adam said “wow; she’s so beautiful.”
The first law of the Universe is order. If we didn’t have laws there would be chaos, but we know that order brings harmony. So God has no fear that the planets and the stars will rebel against you. It was when God created the angels and later, mankind, that things changed – because God created angels and man with a will. God decided to give creation something that would respond to Him. We all have a free will, and with our free will we can choose to respond to the teaching or to fall asleep.
If we were not free, we would not be made in God’s image. A free moral being is conscious that he has choices to make. As a free moral agent, are you safely allowed to have your own way? No! Because our own ways will lead to death! Because if each one of us acts according to our own desires, there would be chaos in this community.
Why do we have rules? Because we live in a community, and a community needs rules; and I don’t like the word “rules” – but we need guidelines.
God does not lift our arms or move our legs. He allows us to have free will, but under His control. Because if God did not have control over the Universe, it would be a worse mess than it is today.
Exodus 20:1-17
And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. "You shall not murder. "You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."
There are 4 commandments that are directly relating to God.
- You shall have no other god before me. “I don’t want to worship God. I want to worship a tree. Or I want to say there is no God.” God says you can’t.
- You shall have no idols, in the form of anything – that is anything that man has created that takes God’s place. And God says it is not to be worshipped, to spend more time with that thing than with God.
- Do not misuse the name of the Lord. Because the name of the Lord is Holy! Yahweh! The names of God have lost meaning today.
- Keep the Sabbath. Take a day of rest! That’s what God was saying. God worked 6 days and on the 7th He rested.
There are 6 commandments related to men
- Honor your mother and father. The only commandment with a promise.
- You shall not murder.
- You shall not commit adultery
- You shall not steal
- You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. If you give false testimony, you are destroying somebody’s reputation.
- You shall not covet
It’s all what we do in our minds. It all starts there.
The origin of sin. How did sin come into the universe? God did not create or decree sin. He does not approve of it. He hates it and does not force His creatures to sin.
James 1:13
Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
Ezekiel 28:14-15
You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.
Isaiah 14:12-14
"How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'
1 John 3:8
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
John 8:44
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Sin originated in Satan. Inside of him. He was the first and original sinner. And when he was cast out of heaven, he took with him a third of the angels, so we’re still in that battle. We still have to fight. He is still sending those arrows against us. He is still wanting the worship that is due to God. In every culture, in every city, in every government.
What was the nature of his sin? Pride. Pride goes before destruction – says the proverbs. Pride is vanity.
Would it be fair to say that the Day Star was able to create sin (or was able to sin without temptation) because he was not made in the image of God?
So what happened to man, then? Genesis chapter 3.
Why did God place that tree in the garden?
God gave them only one commandment. Do not eat of the fruit of the tree of Good and Evil.
1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world.
Did Adam and Eve have to sin? No. That was the purpose of Satan’s temptation. If he can get hold of the will of man, then he’s won.
We can say yes or no to sin, but our understanding is affected and so we don’t always say “yes” or “no”.
What were the immediate effects of the sin?
- They gave up their purity and saw that they were naked. Something lifted off their eyes. God made them to enjoy each other’s presence and purity. There was no “okay what can I get out of you?” No, there was a sense of purity and exchange, and worship. But when they ate, they were ashamed.
- Knowledge of good and evil.
- Law of conscience at work – they were accused by their conscience.
- Law of work – a guilty conscience led them to do work, to present themselves before God. We’re still doing that, aren’t we? We feel we need to do something in order to have God love us.
- Afraid of God. Sin and their guilty conscience led them to hide from God.
- Blame. “It’s not me, it’s her.”
- Corrupted nature. What God had created to be perfect was corrupted.
- Separation from God came into the world.
Romans: By one man’s sin, sin entered the world.
Romans 3:14, 20 – All have sinned.
Long term effects of sin
Sin passed upon all men
Death passed upon all men (physical and spiritual)
Judgment on the earth
Animal dominion was effected, not part of man’s rule anymore
Death is not a stopping of existence, but is a total separation from God.
Kicked out of garden of Eden.
Bible definitions of sin
Proverbs 24:9
1 John 3:4
1 John 5:17
James 4:17

And there are more, these are the ones that Claude found.
Sickness is a result of sin
Natural disaster can be a result of sin
Sin effects the whole earth (maybe does not dictate)
Why didn’t Adam and Eve have children when they were in the garden?
Sin is deceptive:
Sin is enjoyable
Sin deceives us because most of its consequences are hidden. It doesn’t always happen that we sin and then see what the consequences of that sin will be.
It appears controllable – but the more you do it the more it takes control of your life.
James 1:14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
